There is still a good chunk of summer left. The evenings are long, the coulees are green, and nobody in your house is thinking about backpacks yet, but if you glance at a calendar, the school year is closer than it feels, and there is one small thing worth crossing off the list before it gets here.

September Fills Up Faster Than You Think

It happens the same way every year. The first week of school arrives, the routine settles in, and somewhere around the middle of September everyone remembers the dental appointment they meant to book back in the summer. By that point the after school slots and the early morning times are largely spoken for, and families end up waiting weeks for something that actually fits around work and pickup.

Booking now, while the calendar is still open, means you get first pick of the times that work best for your family instead of squeezing into whatever is left.

Summer Routines Have a Way of Drifting

Be honest for a second. How many nights this summer has bedtime brushing quietly been skipped? Camping at Waterton, sleepovers at Grandma's, sunsets that push bedtime to almost ten o'clock. None of it is a disaster on its own, and none of it means you have done anything wrong. Summer is supposed to be a little loose.

But two months of relaxed routine, combined with a steady stream of freezies, slushies, and sweetened iced drinks, does tend to add up. More plaque, a bit more staining, and occasionally a small cavity that was not there in June. A checkup at the end of summer catches those things while they are still small and simple to deal with.

A Visit Now Means Nothing Missed Later

Once school starts, every appointment costs something. A missed class, a rearranged work meeting, a rushed drive across town at quarter past three. Getting everyone in before that begins is the difference between a relaxed visit and a stressful one.

There is also a practical reason. If a filling, a follow up, or a referral turns out to be needed, you have room to handle it in August instead of trying to fit it around a school schedule in October.

What a Family Checkup Actually Involves

For most families it is straightforward. A cleaning to lift the plaque and tartar that brushing at home cannot quite reach, a polish, and an exam to check for decay or anything developing below the surface. X-rays if it has been a while since the last set.

For kids, it is also a chance to see how the permanent teeth are coming in, whether there is enough room for everything, and whether anything is worth keeping an eye on. Most visits take under an hour, and you leave knowing exactly where everyone stands rather than wondering.
